At this time of year, we’re all excited to showcase the exterior of our homes.Having eye-catching gardens with beautiful colours, and healthy plants for our own visual enjoyment is also sure to have your neighbours talking! 

Here are some low maintenance flowers and plants to consider including perennial options to last for years to come. 

FLOWERS

Add colourful varieties of flowers and plants to your beds to make it more lively as it will pop against existing greenery already existing. The list below mentions the best, most colourful flowers including perennials and low maintenance varieties to thrive in your garden.

Cineraria

These plants should be in slightly acidic, rich, well-drained soil with a high compost content. Water regularly and keep the soil moist, not soggy. This variety comes in colours like pink, red, purple & blue.

Lobelia

Soil has to stay very moist and never dry out. This plant will also need protection during brutally cold winters. It comes in many colours like many shades of blue, pink, lavender, and dark-purple.

Hosta or Plantain Lily

Should be watered moderately. More frequent on very hot days, it also shouldn’t be watered over the leaves. 

Impatiens

These plants are not drought tolerant, so they need to be watered regularly to keep the soil moist and prevent the plant from wilting. Colours are white, red, pink, violet, coral, purple, and yellow.

Peonies

These beautiful flowers like a well-drained soil. Colours are pink, red, orange, yellow, and white.

Shrubs & Bushes

Shrubs & bushes are the best way to even out your garden and add more greenery and privacy between yards! Adding love maintenance shrubs will simplify your life without worrying about your plants, but they still look fantastic to others passing by!

Forsythia

Plant forsythia where it will have plenty of room to grow and expand. They grow very fast, with 24 inches of new growth in one year.

Franklin’s Gem  Boxwood

These shrubs need rich, well-drained soil. After the third year of having it, the roots will be deep enough that it can take care of itself.

Dwarf Alberta Spruce:

Dwarf Alberta Spruce needs moist and well-drained soil; they are best suited for winter, last for years, and doesn’t grow very tall.

Hydrangea

Best to plant hydrangeas is in a sheltered location with sunny mornings and shady afternoons. Colours include pink to blue, including all shades of lavender to violet to purple and green and white.
