  • 2 cups sugar
  • ½ cup shortening
  • ½ cup butter
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup dark molasses
  • 4 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • Cream together 2 cups sugar, ½ cup shortening and ½ cup butter.
  • Stir in 2 eggs and ½ cup dark molasses.
  • Whisk together 4 cups flour, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, 1 teaspoon ginger, 1 teaspoon ground cloves, 1 teaspoon nutmeg, 1 teaspoon baking soda and ¼ teaspoon salt and add to sugar-egg mixture.
  • Refrigerate dough for 2-3 hours. Roll out and cut into shapes. Bake at 325 F for 10-12 minutes. Decorate with royal icing or leave plain.
